Behind The Glass...

Bristol Wine School is run by local wine educator and presenter Tristan Darby, who has over 18 years experience in the catering and wine trade, We provide hands-on wine courses, wine tastings, and private & corporate events in Bristol, Bath and beyond.

Quite simply, we love doing what we do, and are passionate that wine tastings shouldn't be stuffy pretentious affairs reserved for elitists and connoisseurs.

We have years of experience in providing wine courses, wine training and corporate and private wine tasting events, and we truly enjoy the opportunity to share our passion and knowledge with others.

At our wine courses and events you can expect to have fun, meet new people and try something new and delicious in relaxed and friendly surroundings. We also believe strongly that wine should almost always be thought about in terms of it's relationship to food, so expect a couple of nibbles as you go to compliment the wine!

What we do...

Our aim is to demystify wine in a fun, hands-on way by sharing our passion and experience, and to introduce our students to new and interesting grapes and styles out of their usual comfort zone.

We believe that the world of wine is there to be enjoyed by all on whatever level, and do all that we can to ensure that our courses and tasting events are interactive, inclusive, memorable and above all - fun!

With years of catering, wine trade and wine education experience behind us and a hands-on informal approach to wine tasting - we are experts in providing unforgettable mouth-watering classes and events.

Our wine courses focus on tasting and group discussion in a social and relaxed environment, with student numbers being kept purposely low to focus on quality teaching time and individual attention.

We appreciate that not everyone has the same level of knowledge and experience, so we give helpful hints at every event to ensure that everyone can join in. All wines are tasted 'blind' to avoid preconceptions - often with a few surprised faces when the wine is revealed!

What Our Customers Say...

"The Introduction to Wine course turned my whole world upside down. I thought I knew what I liked – but you introduced me to new grapes and new styles of wine. Your passion and knowledge are infectious; the classes were informative, liquid and enormous fun!”   Chris Kenber
"Many thanks for running the course... The teaching standard was excellent - informative, relaxed, fun, not patronising (which "wine people" can be!) and clearly very knowledgeable. The course provided excellent value for money and all the wines were great! I look forward to attending further BWS courses, I had a great time and learned a lot."
  Paul Clarke
"Thanks for the course! it has been excellent and far beyond what I expected. I can now select a wine with more understanding and I now know why I like what I like so I can choose it with more confidence. A long way to go still and lots of tasting to look forward to, but the course has given me the knowledge I wanted to make a good start."  Lynne Elvins
"I'd always viewed wine tastings as fairly stuffy, pretentious affairs - where I was made to feel out of my depth. My Bristol Wine School experience was completely different. Our host for the day was approachable, knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic. From the outset it was clear that the course catered for all. The small group atmosphere was relaxed and meant that we were free to ask questions and get a real, broad understanding of the different wines and where they came from... I will definitely be recommending this to friends!"   Melissa Stewart
"Some much deserved and extremely positive feedback on the excellent 1 day wine tasting course at Great Western Wine. Our tutors natural style was engaging, informative, enthusiastic and infectious (in a great way). The pace of the day was just right. Samples were generous, opinions were honest, and the food matching was particularly well planned and thought through. All in all we had great fun, tasted some fantastic wines all in the company of like-minded individuals and a real expert - thank you!" Georgina & Will Driver
“Thank you again for a great afternoon, the whole team really enjoyed it. A superb balance of fun, information and great wines!”  Steve Challis, UK Construction Director, Costa UK
“Many thanks. The wine tasting event was really enjoyable and a lot of fun! The event went down really well and I will certainly circulate your details to other contacts I have here...” Allison Saunders, HP Cloud Services

Allium Brasserie, Bath

Allium Brasserie, Bath

There's isn't a restaurant in Bath quite like Allium Brasserie, and few like it anywhere! It's the home of chef/patron Chris Staines, who held a Michelin star in his last job, and who's already earned Allium three AA rosettes, rave reviews in the press, and a host of local awards.

Chris is one of the most exciting and highly regarded chefs in the country, but Allium is not fine dining in the traditional high end/high bill hotel restaurant style. Instead, it's about the freshest seasonal ingredients, and the most inventive ways to treat them.
